Position Summary:

As part of an agile Aerospace Engineering team, the Project Engineer II manages, assigns, and completes engineering activities on a wide variety of aerodynamic decelerator projects. Provides a technical leadership role in the entire recovery system project lifecycle. Acts as the technical Point of Contact (POC) for the project, and provides guidance to the technical team through the various project phases of work. The project engineer also provides technical support at the proposal stages. Interfaces with customers and identifies their needs. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Supports design and development activities of aerospace recovery systems:
  • Ensures customer requirements are interpreted correctly and understood by the engineering team.
  • Ensures compliance with up-to-date customer Interface Control Drawing (ICD) requirements.
  • Ensures configuration control and management is maintained throughout a project life cycle.
  • Ensures all systems engineering functions are completed by the project team as required by contractual obligations, including but not limited to, creation and maintenance of compliance, Verification and Validation (V&V) matrices Failure Modes & Effects Analysis Reports (FMEA) and risk management activities.
  • Participates in trade studies and design decisions.
  • Ensures all material & system level tests are completed per Airborne and customer requirements.
  • Reviews industry policies and procedures to ensure data accuracy, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Primary technical interface with customers and vendors
  • Provides schedule and cost feedback to management team
  • Provides technical support for the engineering process.
  • Interacts with Airborne Systems chief engineer on technical/managerial aspects of a project.
  • Primary technical interface with parachute rigging and manufacturing departments including the preparation and tracking of Interdepartmental Work Orders (IWOs).
  • Designs, implements, and communicates, an operational plan for completing the project.
  • Monitors progress and performance against the project plan.
  • Takes action to resolve operational problems and minimize delays.
  • Identifies, develops, and gathers resources necessary to complete the project.
  • Prepares engineering designs and work specifications.
  • Develops project schedules, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Selects materials, equipment, project staff, and external contractors.
  • Tracks of hours charged to a project on a daily basis. Expected to be cognizant of the scope of work being undertaken including established task and schedule constraints.
  • Completes Airborne training on processes, procedures, and best practices.
  • Demonstrate compliance with Airborne Systems, State and Federal employment policies.
  • Ensure compliance with local and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Frequently exercises discretion and independent judgment whilst performing the duties of the position.

 

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering field.
  • Requires 2 to 4 years of related experience.

 

Qualifications:

  • Proficient in business communications and interactions.
  • Understanding of aerospace contractual development and processes, project management and planning methodology, and proposal development and technical writing.
  • Understanding of Systems Engineering (SE) and Integration and Test (I&T) practices.
  • Understanding of modern analysis techniques and principles, such as: Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Demonstrates technical knowledge of parachute recovery systems and textile designs and product development.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with CAD tools, AutoCAD and Solid Works preferred.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Project and MS Visio.
  • Must have technical understanding of company mechanisms and products.
  • Demonstrates initiative, professionalism, integrity, decisiveness and the ability to work independently.
  • Accurate and strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.

Travel Requirements:

Periodic travel may be required to support project functions such as supplier visits, product testing, and technical customer meetings.

 

ITAR Requirements:

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

 

Physical Demands: (*)

The position requires that the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel.  The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, and kneel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment: (*)

This position will require a working environment mix comprised of office, shop floor, field and customer locations (both domestic and international). While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions prevalent at the time and an air-conditioned and heated office; static electricity and explosives (in test conditions). The noise level is normally moderate may be occasionally high.
