Mechanic Assistant

Job Summary:

Work with Sewing/Facility Mechanics to maintain all sewing machines as well as other equipment, tools, and machinery. The sewing machine mechanic assistant position also performs building maintenance as needed. Limited independent judgment will be required for this position due to the limited standardization in repair methods and procedures.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain the operating condition of manufacturing production or processing machinery or equipment.
  2. Adjust machinery as needed to support quality and production targets.
  3. Replace broken or malfunctioning components of machinery or equipment.
  4. Observe and test the operation of machinery or equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using voltmeters or other testing devices.
  5. Reassemble equipment after completion of inspections, testing, or repairs.
  6. Keep mechanics area clean and orderly.
  7. Perform general building maintenance as needed.
  8. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
  9. Follow company rules and procedures.



  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.


  • 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Strong mechanical abilities.
  • Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Experience in general building maintenance, including those in the plumbing and electrical fields.
  • Ability to use hand tools and trades type tools.


  • Good communication skills required.

Training Requirements:

  • On-the-job training: 6 to 12 months.

Physical Demands: (*)

The position requires that the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to fingers such as with a keyboard. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and/or reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: (*)

While in the plant, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; humidity, toxic or caustic chemicals, near moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The plant noise level is usually loud. Sometimes working outdoors with exposure to changing weather.
