“The World Intellectual Property Organization promotes innovation and creativity for the economic, social, and cultural development of all countries, through a balanced and effective international and intellectual property system.” (WIPO Mission Statement)

Today, April 26th 2018, is World Intellectual Property Day. The theme this year is “Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity”. Here at Airborne Systems, we have a remarkable team of women influencing aerospace technology through innovative engineering. In honor of World Intellectual Property Day, we want to share the story of our talented, young engineer, Catherine Mollmann. For the past five years, Catherine, better known as “Cat” by her colleagues, has embraced challenges and demonstrated her ability to innovate across multiple areas of engineering. Cat has worked on designs within Airborne System’s Space and Recovery department as well as aiding in the production of our state-of-the-art RA-1 and Hi-5 ram air parachute systems. As part of her commitment to her profession, she also skydives to test our designs for women and small stature jumpers. Now at 219 jumps, Cat is on track to be a valuable test jumper at Airborne Systems. Sometimes innovation requires a woman bold enough to jump out of an airplane with a parachute she made herself.

We did a short interview with Cat to see what advice she has for other young women working hard to create innovation. She says not to get hung up with school. Real world experience is the key to success. “Get out there and network, take internships, and embrace the challenges of a competitive environment” explained Cat. Do not be afraid to jump in and see where you land or, in this case, jump out!

Cat is just one of many Airborne System’s talented, innovative, and creative women. We’re surrounded by women blazing trails, and Airborne Systems is committed to powering the change they are leading.

Airborne Systems is very excited to continue our support to Dynetics, Inc. as they proceed into Phase 3 of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Gremlins program. Dynetics has assembled a tremendous industry team that is providing an innovative and responsive solution to a very challenging mission requirement from DARPA.

The Gremlins program aims to conduct a compelling proof-of-concept flight demonstration that could employ intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and other modular, non-kinetic payloads in a robust, responsive, and affordable manner. The potential to transition to operational use will be demonstrated throughout Phase 3 in a series of ground and flight tests starting in 2018 and culminating in the airborne launch and safe recovery of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles onto a C-130 aircraft in late 2019.

Pennsauken, New Jersey [January 5, 2018] Airborne Systems is honored to announce that we have been officially awarded the contract for the Enhanced Multi-Mission Parachute System (E-MMPS) for the United States Marine Corps (USMC). The E-MMPS is equipped with an Airborne Systems proprietary Hi-5 canopy and Edge harness container, as well as an attachable military working dog harness. The E-MMPS features our latest STORM drogue release system. Airborne Systems will provide training services, commercial manuals, and all necessary support to ensure the successful fielding of this new parachute system. The combination of elements in the E-MMPS is the result of several years of research and development by the Airborne Systems team and partners.  This new system will replace the existing legacy MMPS currently in use.

The Hi-5 canopy is best known for its outstanding glide modulation system. The Hi-5 features a remarkable 5.5:1 glide ratio and can transition to a 1:1 glide ratio with a simple control input using the Glide Modulation System.  JC Berland, Chief Technology Officer of Airborne Systems, says, “The Hi-5 offers superior glide performance with its unique patent pending Glide Modulation System. It offers stability and resistance to stall and allows for the most accurate landings.”

This is a significant win for Airborne Systems. It expands our customer base and signifies the trust in our design and ingenuity. We are constantly providing the best technology available worldwide, and when that technology does not exist, we develop it ourselves. Airborne Systems is thrilled not only to meet the unique and specific requirements of the USMC, but also to offer the newest technology currently available for tactical operations in the world. We are confident in our products and are honored to have been chosen by the USMC for this opportunity.

We look forward to helping the USMC remain safe and successful in serving our country.

Airborne Systems is proud to host learning sessions for the Camden Youth Aviation Program. This program is geared towards youths with a passion for aviation, good grades, and a dedication to expand their knowledge and pursue a career in the aviation field. These careers range from pilots, aircraft manufacturing, aircraft maintenance, law related services, such as Sky Marshalls or Drug Enforcement Agents, and much more.

Vincent Mignot, our International Business Unit Manager at Airborne Systems, has given several presentations and tours to the Camden Youth Aviation Program. During their visits, the members of the program watch videos to learn about our company and our numerous products and capabilities. They also, receive a detailed tour of the production floor, watch packing demonstrations and even get to try on parachutes. It is truly inspiring to see the children leave here with a smile on their face as we shape the young minds of Aviation!

More information about the program:

“The Camden Youth Aviation Program tries to show the young people of Camden and Southern NJ all aspects of aviation and that there is more to life than what they see in their neighborhoods.  Also by introducing them to aviation, we are hoping to give them something to dream about and to inspire them to rise above the limits of their environment.  Our goals are to use aviation to show our young people 1) reasons to stay in school, 2) the practical applications of STEM, 3) exciting and rewarding careers open to them, and 4) role models truly worthy of respect.

The program is open to all Camden and Southern NJ youth who are interested in aviation.  Participation in the Camden Youth Aviation Program is not limited to any one group or organization, but welcomes all young people who are interested in aviation.  Additionally, the Camden Youth Aviation Program tries to act as a resource to schools and youth groups to make them aware of the educational aviation resources that are available to them. The Camden Youth Aviation Program was established under the auspices of the former Camden Police Foundation and the Diocese of Camden’s Community Relations Advisory Board.  The Camden Youth Aviation Program is incorporated as a Non-Profit Corporation in the State of NJ and is a certified 501(c)3 non-profit charity.”

More information about the Camden Youth Aviation Program can be found on their website at www.CamdenYAP.org or on the Camden Youth Aviation Program Facebook page.
