Advanced Ram Air Parachute Systems

PS-2, Hi-5, & RA-1

Airborne Systems carries several types of ram air canopies. The RA-1, Hi-5, PS-2, and Marauder, just to name a few!

RA-1

The Intruder®, Type Classified by the U.S. Army as RA-1, was developed to replace the MC-4 Ram Air Parachute System. It features improvements to glide performance, canopy handling characteristics, and weight carrying capacity. The canopy design provides a stall resistant ability that significantly reduces the
potential for jumper injury on landing.

Main and Reserve Canopy

The main canopy for Intruder® is a nine-cell, hybrid construction capable of three deployment methods:
• Double Bag Static Line (DBSL)
• Over-the-Shoulder Ripcord
• Bottom-of-Container, Throw-Out Pilot Chute (BOC)

The Intruder® incorporates a collapsible slider, resulting in a completely silent canopy during flight. Incorporation of vents in Intruder’s® reserve canopy allow it to meet demanding requirements for height loss, during opening and throughout the entire performance range.

PS-2

Chosen and type-classified by the United States Marine Corps to replace their legacy multi-mission system, PS-2 is the latest high performance system offered by Airborne Systems. The system features a harness container capable of both bottom-of-container pilot chute and droguefall deployment methods. The PS-2 uses the Edge Harness Container with the Hi-5 Main and Reserve Parachute.

The harness container incorporates eight attachment points. High attachment points with outboard handles provide the user with maximum ability to customize equipment attachments. Additional attachments include oxygen and radio pouches, which can be set up on either side of the jumper. Air vent padding ensures the harness fits comfortably while maintaining maximum airflow to cool the jumper. Primary and secondary drogue release handles are located in standard positions to ensure easy transition for jumpers.

Hi-5

Hi-5 is the most advanced and innovative canopy since the invention of ram air parachutes. It has the reliability and safety of the RA-1 but surpasses its performance in handling, glide ratio, and rapid descent.

Glide Modulation

Hi-5 has a built-in Glide Modulation System which allows a jumper to adjust the glide ratio anywhere between 5:1 and 1:1. Glide modulation is controlled by an additional set of toggles placed on the front risers. The jumper can adjust the glide ratio while steering the canopy. This is extremely useful for adjusting the position in a stack, or for landing safely in a tight drop zone.

Hi-5 is designed as both a Main and Reserve Canopy.

Marauder

The Marauder Parachute is the ram-air parachute newest design of Airborne Systems. It increases the glide of the RA-1 canopy to over 4.5:1 and adds the ability to control that glide in the same method as the Hi-5 while maintaining the renowned handling characteristics of the RA-1. Troop Parachutes

OCTO-11, T-11, & MC-6

We proudly offer three types of troop parachutes, the brand new OCTO-11, the legacy T-11, and the MC-6.

OCTO-11

After 10 years of service, the T-11 parachute performance and user feedback was analyzed by our Research and Development team. A major development program was initiated aimed at preserving the unique qualities of the T-11 (soft, consistent openings, slow rate of descent and virtually perfect stability) while reducing the number of components, simplifying rigging, reducing packing time, and improving responsiveness to riser slip maneuvers. The result is the OCTO-11. This parachute features an octagonal crown and eight arms fitted with horizontal mesh to improve stability. The eight arms are joined to form a continuous hem. The small eight corner vents are meshed to eliminate the risk of jumper entanglement.

The unique design of the OCTO-11 allows for smooth progressive opening (4 seconds) and low oscillation after canopy inflation. Two toggles allow the jumper to rotate the canopy along its vertical axis while maintaining its ballistic characteristics. No drive is created, which significantly reduces the chance of canopy collision. Effective riser slip can be induced with minimal force.

The OCTO-11 is fully compatible with the T-11R reserve parachute.

T-11

The T-11 is in exclusive use with the U.S. Army which was designed, developed and manufactured by Airborne Systems. The T-11 includes a completely redesigned main and reserve parachute and an integrated harness assembly that is suitable for a wider range of soldier weights than the previous system. Airborne Systems is the only qualified source to provide the T-11 system internationally.

The unique design of the main canopy allows for minimal oscillation after canopy inflation, even after lowering the combat load. The T-11 achieves a lower rate of descent by having a canopy that is 28 percent larger than the T-10, resulting in a remarkable reduction in landing injuries; greater than 75% over 3,000 jumps.

MC-6

Developed through the U.S. Army Special Operations Force’s Tactical Assault Parachute System (SOFTAPS) program for precision infiltration, the MC-6 army troop parachute features the latest in advanced technology for steerable military parachute systems. It offers greater maneuverability, exceptional performance in high altitude drop zones and achieves a lower rate of descent compared to the MC-1 system. The MC-6 System has replaced all the MC-1 steerable troop parachutes in the U.S. military. Airborne Systems is the only source qualified to provide the MC-6 system internationally.

The MC-6 main canopy is a steerable, round, 28 gore polyconic parachute, which has been used by U.S. Special Forces for over 10 years, proving itself to be consistently safe and reliable.

The MC-6 has demonstrated softer openings at higher elevations and does not suffer from the type of damage seen on the MC1-1C at this deployment condition.

Guided Precision Aerial Delivery Systems (GPADS)

MicroFly II, FireFly, DragonFly

Airborne Systems designs, develops and manufactures a complete line of cargo delivery parachute systems to carry payloads weighing between 100 – 42,000 lb. These aerial delivery systems were designed using the most advanced technology to deliver supplies to military forces and humanitarian missions on land and water accurately, autonomously and economically.

MicroFly II®

The MicroFly II® is intended to fly autonomously to the IP (Impact Point) without external guidance. Should a user desire to fly the MicroFly II® manually, an optional remote is available which can control multiple MicroFly II® systems simultaneously. The MicroFly II® can be used to accompany HALO/HAHO teams during insertion and can be used to supply elements on the ground.

MicroFly II® features:
• 15 lb lighter than MicroFly®
• Simplifed drogue fall rigging
• Removable lithium battery with a six-month maintenance schedule
• Silent slider reducing noise of the system in flight (On Intruder® 360 canopy only)
• Optional upgrade: waterproof to a depth of 3 feet for 30 minutes

FireFly®

The FireFly® was selected as the system of choice for the U.S. Army Joint Precision Airdrop System 2,200 lb (JPADS 2K) Program of Record.

The FireFly® Guidance, Navigation, and Control software analyzes its environment in real time, adjusting the flight algorithm several times each
second. The FireFly®’s ability to continually adjust the flight plan results in greater accuracy and higher reliability.

DragonFly®

The DragonFly® has been selected as the system of choice for the U.S. 10,000 lb Joint Precision Aerial Delivery System (JPADS 10k) program.

The DragonFly® is unique in that the canopy is packed on a frame which can be separated from the Airborne Guidance Unit (AGU). This allows the AGU to be charged, maintained, and stored separately while the canopy is being packed.

Special Operations Long Range (SOLR)

The SOLR® Family of Oxygen Systems consists of a large complete range of Personnel Oxygen Systems for High Altitude Parachute Operations. The line includes:

SOLR® Mask

The SOLR® Oxygen Mask is the oxygen mask for MFF HAHO. The SOLR® Oxygen Mask is built off a modular platform allowing field maintenance
and reconfiguration to become effortless. The SOLR® Oxygen Mask features a non-dilution oxygen demand regulator which delivers 100%
oxygen during inhalation, during both prebreathing and actual jump and descent under canopy.

SOLR® Portable Test Stand

The SOLR® Portable Test Stand is exactly what it sounds like, an extremely portable test stand that can be used to check whether SOLR® Oxygen equipment is operational.

It can be used in the field with no source of power and is able to perform all maintenance checks up to level two on SOLR® masks and bottles. It comes in a small Pelican® case as shown below, and weighs just 25 pounds (11 kg). The ruggedness of the Pelican® case makes it a perfect solution for field testing.

SOLR® 4500 Pre-Breather

The SOLR® 4500 Pre-Breather is changing how pre breathing is achieved. Pre breathing no longer has to take place in the aircraft attached
to a large console. With the SOLR® 4500 Pre- Breather, an individual can pre breathe at the location of their choice, board the aircraft and reach altitude without ever having to worry about breaking the pre-breathe cycle.

With the SOLR® 4500 Pre-Breather Attachment System installed in the aircraft, each individual prebreather can be mounted quickly and securely. With a 285 cubic inch cylinder the SOLR® 4500 Pre-Breather has no problem delivering oxygen for the most demanding pre-breathing
schedules.

The SOLR 4500 Pre-breather is also small enough that the Cylinder can be placed into the jumpers pack leaving behind no oxygen equipment in the aircraft and providing additional oxygen on the ground if necessary.

SPACE AND RECOVERY

A Long History in the Space and Recovery Field

The Space and Recovery business unit is dedicated to providing our customers with unparalleled technical expertise and experience. Our Space Systems focused engineering group is the world’s leader with respect to Entry, Descent and Landing Systems (EDL) for crewed space flight applications, booster recovery systems, and planetary exploration missions. Airborne Systems has extensive experience in the design and development of EDL systems for various space applications and has the distinction of providing the recovery systems from Discoverer XIII, the first man-made item ever recovered from orbit in 1960, up through the Mars 2020 Lander and the latest NASA and commercial crew space capsules. Our Air Systems focused group provides unique aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicle, helicopter, cargo, and weapon system deceleration and recovery parachute and airbag solutions.

Space Systems

Since the early days of the U.S. space program and the development of the recovery system for the Discoverer XIII reentry capsule (the first man made item ever recovered from orbit) Airborne Systems has been at the forefront of Entry, Descent & Landing System (EDLS) development for space and high altitude applications. Since the 1960’s, Airborne Systems has designed and developed EDLS systems for a multitude of manned and un-manned, space applications. Today, Airborne Systems is leading the way with the design and development of the EDL systems needed for America’s new fleet of man-rated spacecraft being developed to replace the Space Shuttle (Orion, CST-100, Dragon, New Shepard).

The Airborne Systems Space Systems business unit is dedicated to supporting the emerging commercial space industry and is the world’s leader with respect to the development of EDLS systems for high altitude and space flight applications; both manned and un-manned, terrestrial and interplanetary.

Air Systems

Aircraft applications include spin and stall recovery systems for flight test, aircraft escape systems – ejection seat and walk around, and aircraft landing brakes. Weapons systems include decelerators for both conventional, submunitions and special weapons.

Airborne Systems also supports the U.S. Missile Defense Agency by providing a number of air launch systems to deliver targets for use in the testing of missile defense systems.

Inflatable Systems

We have developed a wide range of inflatable products starting with production of hundreds of thousands of BSU-85 Air Inflatable Retarders in the 1960’s to the recent development of large scale Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerators (IADs) for NASA.

This experience provides a significant capability to design, analyze, develop and fabricate inflatable and fabric structures including inflatable decelerators for supersonic and hypersonic applications, impact attenuation airbags for space and aircraft applications, flotation and recovery devices for naval applications, inflatable deployable wings for light aircraft, pneumatic muscle actuators, and deployable/transportable structures for a variety of applications.
