Logistics & Export Manager

Position Summary:

Manages all aspects of the logistics and export management function to control, deliver, and distribute products and materials to the destination. Implements an overall strategy, metrics, and processes to deploy an optimized logistic network and operations. Oversees critical and related inventory, distribution, and transportation operations that support the achievement of organizational goals and KPI’s for product delivery and customer satisfaction. Selects vendors and negotiates rates and service levels and monitors performance. Ensures compliance with all required government laws and licensing regulations governing transportation of goods. Utilizes analytics to monitor and measure performance, identify problems in operations, and achieve high performance at optimal cost.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs.
  • Ensure that products are properly packaged and marked according to contractual requirements.
  • Responsible to ensure that all Hazardous Materials (Dangerous Goods) are shipped in accordance with all DOT (Dept. of Transportation), ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization and IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations, including the training of all personnel who package, mark, declare or ship hazardous materials.
  • Responsible for domestic and international logistics:
    • Domestic:
      • Obtain domestic freight quotes for the sales team.
      • Responsible to make arrangements with US Government transportation offices (currently DCMA Harford Ct) for the transportation of military shipments.
      • Contract the services of domestic shipping companies (trucking and small package delivery).
      • Negotiate freight rates for inbound or outbound deliveries.
      • Ensure that bills of lading are properly classified and rated.
      • Approve the payment of freight bills.
    • International:
    • Obtain international freight quotes for the sales team.
      • Responsible for all export requirements associated with AES compliance.
      • Develops and implements systems and policies to administer documentation processes required to export merchandise and materials.
      • Possesses in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of customs rules and regulations and other related requirements for global shipping.
      • Contract the services of international freight forwarders and shipping companies.
      • Obtain and negotiate freight rates and overall shipping costs.
      • Coordinate with the Export Compliance Manager to ensure that shipments are compliant with export regulations, are properly and accurately documented and controlled, and have been properly licensed prior to shipment.
      • Resolves complex issues that have been escalated and expedites solutions with clients, customs officials, and shippers.
      • Contract the services of Customs Brokers, while ensuring that all imports are properly classified for Customs duty purposes.
      • Obtain ATA Carnets when needed.
      • Arrange and expedite the inbound and outbound transportation of goods worldwide.
      • Approve payment of freight, duty and associated charges related to the movement of goods internationally.
      • Prepare international documents as required.
      • Maintain files in the Compliance Folder for Demonstration Shipments and STA Shipments.
      • Backup to California exports.
    • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
    • Follows company rules and procedures.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the related area as an individual contributor.
  • 1 to 3 years supervisory experience preferred.

 Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive experience in logistics and export management.
  • Extensive experience in domestic and international transportation.
  • Extensive professional experience requiring ability to communicate effectively as a leader.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good working knowledge of the consumer goods industry.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Experience working with electronic data.

 Travel Requirements:

Periodic travel may be required to support project functions such as supplier visits, product testing, and technical customer meetings.

ITAR Requirements:

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

The position requires that the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel.  The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, and kneel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds without assistance, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: (*)

This position will require a working environment mix comprised of office, shop floor, field and customer locations (both domestic and international). While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to static electricity; explosives in test conditions; fumes; airborne particles; outside weather conditions prevalent at the time and an air-conditioned and heated office. The noise level is normally moderate may be occasionally high.
